For most lots away from water, clearing on your own private land does not require a state permit, though your town may have local rules so it is worth a call to your code enforcement officer first. The big exception is land in a shoreland zone near a lake, river, stream, or wetland, where Maine limits how much you can cut. There is no flat per-acre number because a half acre of light brush and saplings is a completely different job from a half acre of heavy mature timber with big stumps to pull. What moves it is the density and size of the trees, the terrain and how wet or steep it is, the number and size of stumps, equipment access, and whether the material gets chipped on site, hauled away, or left as firewood.
